Is It Easy to Transfer From Ung Oconne to Uga
What is the college in Athens that kids are transferring to UGA?

I'm concerned that my son will not be able to get in UGA out of high school. What is the college that kids are going to in Athens and then transferring to UGA? Anyone have any experience on this? Thanks!!!

Yes 4 year now. Actually a university

It was Gainesville State for the longest. I remember folks transferring into UGA from there. And I remember folks moving to Athens for the "college experience" and just hanging out at Gainesville State while they spent all of their time drinking and getting stoned. I'm sure it just depends on the person. Depending on where you live, there may be better close-by options (like Kennesaw).

it's not hard to get into UGA at all as a transfer, way easier than straight out of high school.

They can transfer in from a lot of different places, doesn't have to be in or around Athens just unless they want to be close (to hit downtown). I know people from Dalton St, Kenn St, etc that have done it

I tend to agree. I worked my ass off in high school to get into UGA, yet many of the kids i know who screwed around in high school and made C's and B's are now at UGA after attending an easy community college for a few semesters. Makes me feel like my hard work has been devalued a bit. On the other hand, there are plenty of kids I know who worked their ass off in high school, made good grades and test scores and just didn't make it in as UGA is very competitive to get into straight from high school and I think they deserve a shot to attend UGA if they want to. Hopefully UGA raises the bar higher eventually for transfer applicants.

While transferring into UGA is easier than acceptance as a freshman (as it always has been and as it should be), the number of students attempting to transfer now makes that process more competitive. Most students will not be able to transfer until the spring semester of their sophomore year of college because of the credit hours requirement, unless they have AP/Dual Enrollment credits from high school.

Agree that UNG-Oconee is the big one.
Wonder if you'll see that more with Piedmont, having that secondary campus right there on Prince Ave.

Meh... I was one of those kids. I transferred in from UNG.I am one of the rarest cases of students though. Barely made it through high school (got denied by Georgia Southern I was so bad) had to settle for Gainesville State, after 3 semesters there I failed out and worked for a year. Got my shit together, made straight A's for 5 straight semesters and transferred into UGA. My GPA was a 1.0 when I failed out. UNG replaces grades if you retake them so I retook all the classes I made an F in and got A's so my GPA jumped from a 1.0 to a 3.9 by the time it was time to transfer, but UGA combines them. So my UGA GPA was a 2.9.
Honestly the transfer standards changing would have no baring on the results. Most of the kids that end up going through with it and transferring, are the ones doing it for the tight reasons and end up graduating. The value of our university's degree is rising every year, and the small amount of students that take the easy way into UGA usually fail/drop out anyway because the workload is so much more.

KSU.
My sister went there after I went to UGA. She never actually transferred, but that's a school that's grown a lot in it's own right over the past decade. You can do a helluva lot worse as a starting point if you're looking to get into UGA as a transfer. Honestly, you can do a helluva lot worse just sticking with KSU for 4 years, too.

I did exactly what you're talking about after I graduated HS. I went to Gainesville State (what is now UNG) and lived in Athens with plans to transfer to UGA and if I were a parent, I would not recommend it.
For one, it's very difficult to get all your classes in Oconee, so you end up having to drive from Athens to the Oakwood campus (45 min to an hour) for at least the first two semesters.
Second, going to a commuter campus doesn't lend itself to the same "college experience" that most people want as a freshman. I had a good time because I had a lot of friends from HS at UGA, but didn't meet a lot of new people with new experiences like you should as an 18-year old college student.
Third, there's something that makes you feel inferior about being in a college town like Athens and not going to UGA. In my experience at least. Basically every young person you meet in Athens goes to or went to UGA, so after a while it gets old to laugh about not being smart enough to get into UGA.
I failed miserably the two semesters I lived in Athens. And after taking a couple years off, I eventually went back and got my degree from UNG. And while I don't necessarily regret my decision because the experiences we have shape the people we ultimately become, but I think going to Kennesaw, GCSU, etc. would've been a better decision to just go live on campus somewhere and get to know new people.
I'm not going to say it can't work, because plenty of people have done it. But that was my personal experience.
Also the year was 2008, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't base that decision partly on the fact that UGA was going to be preseason #1 for the first time in my lifetime. You live and you learn.

Actually, UNG is the consolidation of North Georgia College in Dahlonega and Gainesville State, which used to be a junior college. North Georgia has a campus, dorms, etc. and is a good academic school with a nice campus life. if you go to one of the satellite schools like Oconee or the Oakwood campus its the same as going to a commuter school. Also don't know how successful UNG has been in getting the academics at the satellite campuses up to par with the main campus.

I mean, financiallyspeaking, this is the way to go too. Do as much of your core somewhere else and transfer in to finish up.

The Harvard of the South. Sounds like you should have enjoyed high school more and transferred in.

Transfer admissions are still a lot tougher at Georgia than most other school, I did a lot of research on different options when I was getting out of the military.

How someone gets into school makes no difference to me. If they did well enough to graduate from the school, they deserved to be there. If UGA sees a large number of those transferring in that took the route you are describing ultimately dropping out, they should up the standard. If they see the opposite, kids finishing school - leave it alone. At the end of the day, just being honest, where your degree comes from and how you got into school become less and less meaningful in your career the older you get - outside of just a couple of professions. In fact, how you got in is not something I have ever heard of anyone asking or being asked when applying for a job. Just something to keep in mind.
